Mod «Toxic Sky» for Project Zomboid

Toxic Sky introduces a dynamic environmental gas hazard framework to Project Zomboid, adding atmospheric threats that evolve, drift, and interact with the world. Developed for Build 42 (42.14), it is fully compatible with Singleplayer and Multiplayer modes.
Hazard Types

  • Light Gas: Represents household gas leaks and industrial vapors. It grows stronger at higher elevations, encouraging vertical awareness, and can fill buildings over time.
  • Heavy Gas: Simulates chlorine-like industrial gases. It becomes more potent at lower depths, creating dangerous underground pockets in basements and low terrain.
  • Chemical Fallout: Large-scale atmospheric contamination events that cover wide areas and move with the wind. These are announced via the Emergency Broadcast System and persist for a limited time before dispersing.

Exposure and Effects
All gas hazards accumulate toxicity over time rather than causing instant damage. Prolonged exposure triggers coughing animations and voice playback, eventually overwhelming unprotected survivors.

  • Animals, including horses, can die from prolonged exposure.
  • Housing animals inside roofed buildings provides protection.
  • Environmental factors now impact logistics and base planning.

Protective Equipment

  • Gas Masks: Supports all vanilla gas mask types. Masks degrade gradually through exposure, and filters develop diminishing returns when low on charge. Durability and diminishing returns can be disabled in sandbox settings.
  • SCBA Units: Provide full protection while active until the oxygen tank is depleted. Ideal for extreme contamination zones.
  • Bandanas and Dust Masks: Provide a small emergency reduction in exposure but are not suitable for long-term survival.

Sandbox Customization
The mod includes extensive server and sandbox configuration options:

  • Event frequency and duration ranges
  • Fallout drift speed and toxicity strength
  • Gas mask durability damage
  • Animal damage scaling
  • Diminishing spawn rates over time

Immersive Integration
Fallout events are reported through the Emergency Broadcast System, providing contamination alerts, estimated event durations, and wind information to predict fallout movement.
Multiplayer Features
Admin tools allow for:

  • Spawning Light Gas, Heavy Gas, or Fallout Zones
  • Creating permanent hazard zones for server events
  • Using server-guarded admin commands
  • Manually triggering fallout events
